Episode #009: Treat your CV and Cover Letter as your Product.

February 22, 2021

Episode summary:

When I was in consulting / IB, making sure that we got rid of typos/double spaces/all well aligned (boxes, images) was an integral part of the job. You would be surprised how many eyes go through a client presentation before its sent out. Why place such emphasis on making sure a box is 1 mm to the left or that you do not interchange “their” for “there”? It is distracting and can easily discredit a presentation especially if that is your product.

Treat your CV as a product and make sure its client ready because typos is the one thing that makes it easier for HR to toss your CV / Cover Letter.

You don’t want to make it easy for them. Heck, you want to do everything in your power to take yourself out of the equation – outsource that decision making process to them.

But if you have typos in your CV / Cover Letter, you do exactly the opposite. You make it easier for them to toss you out.

How do I do it?

I make “F7” my friend when using MS Word. Try it out.

Secondly, except the application deadline is in an hour, I do not rush in sending out my application. I take my time to revise. In some cases I ask a friend to go through and maybe he/she finds something in there that I completely missed.

Good luck!

[for Mac users, try “fn F7”]
