How to Write A Cover Letter – No Experience

November 29, 2021

First and foremost, congratulations on being a college graduate! You certainly earned that degree, and now it is time to put what you learned into practice. But as you are probably already aware of, the job market is a highly saturated place. With millions of people job searching who have years of pristine accomplishments, you might feel intimidated jumping into the game with little to no experience under your belt. However, don’t let that hold you back. With a persuasive, influencing cover letter, you will be able to give yourself the best chance at landing a role that can launch you towards your career goals. Ok easier said than done but it is possible.

Writing Your Cover Letter Tips

When it comes to writing your cover letter, there are some key things you will want to take into consideration to sell yourself. For example, make sure you use keywords in your write up that are in the job description. This helps employers see that you have a good connection between who you are and the person they need for the position they are trying to fill. In addition, really highlight your skills, college-related metrics, any internships, etc. to show that you would be an excellent, responsible employee.

As a final tip, do your research on the company you are applying to and add some of that knowledge into your cover letter so the employer sees you are invested and want to learn more about them. Something as simple as saying that you believe in their mission statement can really captivate.

Sample Cover Letter

Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name],

My name is Jane Doe, and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to apply for your Entry Level Mechanical Engineering position at ABC Company. It’s clear from the job description and your mission statement that you seek to hire a versatile, analytical candidate who is able to tackle complex prototype components. Based on my educational background and underlying knowledge on troubleshooting and executing industrial machine designs, I’m certain that I would perform exceptionally in this role.

I recently earned my Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from 123 University, two years of which I interned at 456 Company. There I was able to master diverse automated solutions, such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks, and was a part of the launch of a successful $3 million innovative project for government officials. Throughout my studies, I have also sharpened my ability to problem solve, plan, and execute comprehensive protocols in both team and individual settings.

As someone who has acquired strong ideologies of designing, building, and testing mechanical systems, I am confident that I would be an ideal candidate and a great asset to your company if given the chance.

Thank you for your time and consideration, and I look forward to discussing this opportunity with you further.

Sincerely,

Dan Solomon

Conclusion

I know it may feel complicated writing a cover letter with not much background experience to offer, but don’t frame that as an all or nothing type of thing. Everyone has to start somewhere, and this just so happens to be the beginning of your career aspirations. Focus on what your skills are, your education, what you can bring to the table, and your eagerness to advance. As a final note, always remember that if the first place you apply to does not work out, there are tons of other opportunities out there. Stay persistent, and will find your ideal employer to begin your resume building journey in no time.

Combining this with a tailored CV could be what you just need to get the attention of the right employer.

Good luck
